Ask Larry

Which Month(s) Should My Husband And I Choose To Start Benefits?

I will be 66 on June 28, 2018. My husband will be 66 on July 14, 2018.

1. I want to make sure that I get my full retirement age benefit, so
I need to know how to answer the question on my application
regarding when to begin my own benefit, June or July?

2. We understand that I must be receiving my full benefit in order
for my husband to apply for his spousal benefit, so when my husband
applies for his spousal benefit, how should he answer the question
on his application regarding which month to begin his spousal benefit?

Thanks!

Hi,

Assuming that there are no typos in your question, if you want to receive your full retirement age (FRA) rate you would choose June 2018 as your month of election to start benefits. And, if your husband wants to file for just spousal benefits only and not yet file for his own benefits, then he should choose July 2018 as his month of election to start his spousal benefits.

Before filing, though, you and your husband should strongly consider using our maximization software to make sure that you're choosing the best possible filing strategy.

Best, Jerry
