Unless your son is disabled, the last month for which he can be paid Social Security survivor benefits is the later of a) the month before the month he reaches age 18, or b) the month he graduates from high school (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0414.html). Surviving child benefits are not paid to college students unless they qualify for disabled adult child benefits.
