When Should My Wife And I File?

Wife turns 66 sept 25 2016, I turn 66 December 21st 2016 full retirement age is 66 when should I file for wife to get 50% of my social security and when should I file for my social security taking it at age 66

Hi,

One or the other of you could file a restricted application for spousal benefits only effective with the month you attain full retirement age (FRA), which is September 2016 for your wife and December 2016 for you. However, that would require the other one of you to file for benefits on your own account at that point, and start receiving benefits. The spouse that filed the restricted application could then switch to their own account at age 70.

This may or may not be the best strategy for you, and depends on numerous factors. You may wish to consider running the maximization software available on this website in order to get a better understanding of which strategy is best for the two of you.

Best, Jerry
