Ask Larry

When Should I Start Medicare?

I will turn 65 in December this year and though I have Health Insurance that is good it costs almost $600.00 a month.
I'm aware that I need to register for Medicare in September to prevent from being penalized I still have questions about the best time to leave my current coverage and go on Medicare even though I don't plan to retire for a few years from now. Thanks for taking time.

Hi,

You can start Part A (Hospital Inpatient) coverage for free effective with the month you reach age 65. Part B of Medicare, which covers outpatient services, is optional but can also start as early as the month you reach age 65. You can also sign up for optional Part D of Medicare, which covers prescription drug charges. There are also optional Medicare Advantage plans that combine the coverages. Additional charges can apply if you defer taking the optional plans until after age 65, unless you are covered under an employer group health plan.

The monthly charges for the optional Medicare plans vary, but would almost certainly total substantially less than $600 per month. Whether or not the coverage is as good as your current plan, and whether or not you can continue your current plan after age 65, are questions you'll need to look into. Best, Jerry
