Ask Larry

When Should I Get My Award Letter?

Larry,
My FRA of 66 is January 2018. I applied for social security retirement benefits October 2017 to start with my month of FRA. I received a call from SS about a week later and all was well but as of December 30,2017 my application still shows online as processing and I have not yet received and award letter. When should I receive the letter?
Thanks,
Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

It could be anytime now, but it depends on what's causing the delay in the processing of your application. You probably don't need to do anything further, but you might want to call and check on the status of your claim.

In the meantime, you may want to consider using the maximization software available on this website to determine if you have any better filing options available to you.

Best, Jerry
