When I Start Drawing My Social Security Benefits Will I Automatically Be Enrolled In Medicare Part A?

I am 69 yrs, 2 months. I am still working and I am using my employer's health insurance, with a high deductible plan and an HSA. When I turn 70 in August, 2022 I intend to begin collecting social security benefits, but to continue working and to stay on my current health care plan (not Medicare). I also would like to continue contributing to my HSA. My question is: When I start my social security benefits, will that automatically enroll me in Part A of medicare, and will that prevent me from contributing to my HSA? If so, would I need to stop my HSA contributions in January or February to avoid the 6 month look-back penalty. I have called the social security office twice, and got two different answers. Thanks.

Hi. Yes. People who are at least age 65 can't collect Social Security benefits without being automatically enrolled in Part A of Medicare.

My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, but my understanding is that you can't contribute to an HSA in any month that you're enrolled in Medicare. And, if you're at least 6 months past age 65 when you apply for your Social Security benefits, your Part A enrollment starts 6 months prior to the month of filing of your application.

One thing you could do is delay filing for benefits until 6 months after the month you turn age 70. You could then claim 6 months of retroactive benefits, so you wouldn't lose any benefits by applying late. Plus, your Part A Medicare would then not start until 6 months prior to your application month.

Best, Jerry
