When Do I File For Widow's Benefits?

My name is Louise, I am 51...birthdate is 01/11/1970 , my husband past 1 yr 9 months, when do I file for widows benefits? He was on SSDI...his birthdate is Nov.22, 1959...

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Age 60 is the earliest that you can collect monthly widow's benefits unless either a) you are disabled, or b) you have a child in your care who is eligible for benefits on your husband's account and who is either under age 16 or disabled.

However, there is a one-time death benefit of $255 that can potentially be paid to a surviving spouse regardless of their age (https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-02095). If you haven't already applied for the $255 death benefit you need to do so within 2 years of your husband's date of death.

Best, Jerry
