When Can I File For Spousal Benefits On My Husband's Record?

My Husband jut turned 65 he ha been on SSD for a number of years as a diabled Veteran. I am just 64 and have been a homemaker worked very little, not enough to qualify for benifits. When can I file for benifits under my husbands benifits ? I do get some money but in my husbands.

Hi,

You can file for reduced spousal benefits now, but your monthly rate will be higher if you wait until age 66 to apply. Also, if you file for spousal benefits prior to when your husband's benefits convert from disability to retirement benefits at his age 66, the special family maximum formula that Social Security applies to disability records could limit what you would be able to receive. You might want to check with Social Security and ask them to explain your filing options.

Best, Jerry
