When Can I Expect My Benefits To Be Recalculated?

I started receiving benefits in July 2016. I was told benefits would be recalculated at the end of 2016 to include 2016 earnings and to factor in my exact age rather than my age at the first of the year. There has been no recalculation to date (Sept 2017). Can I expect that to happen or am I required to request recalculation/update? Thanks!

Hi,

If you are due a benefit recomputation based on 2016 earnings, it should be done automatically. Social Security usually does such recomputations around September of the following year. If you'd prefer not to wait, you could likely speed up the process by submitting proof of your 2016 earnings to Social Security and requesting a manual recomputation.

Best, Jerry
