What Should I Do?

I will be turning 62 in November 2017, my first marriage of 16 years I stayed home with the kids and did not work. I remarried. My husband is 54. Please tell me what I should do. I figure my husband will work till he's 70.

Hi,

You won't be able to receive spousal benefits until your husband starts drawing his benefits, and you couldn't draw benefits on your first husband's record while you are remarried, unless your first husband is deceased and you remarried after reaching age 60. So, it sounds like the only way you could qualify for benefits sooner is if you have at least 40 quarters of Social Security coverage yourself. If that's the case, you may want to use the maximization software available on this website to determine your best filing strategy.

By the way, even if you don't qualify for monthly benefits you can likely sign up for Medicare at age 65. However, in that case you would have to pay a premium for Part A coverage that would otherwise be premium free if you qualified for Social Security benefits.

Best, Jerry
