What Can I Do?

They have cancelled my disability b/c my paper check got lost in the mail in December. I waited b4 I called as I was thinking it might just be late. When I called and told them I never got it I applied for Direct deposit to get the payment as fast as possible as Christmas was approaching and I did get the deposit all at Christmas Eve 24 December… They’re telling me and sent me one letter only one saying that because the check was returned returned to sender that I was getting canceled because I must not need it even though I’ve already gotten direct deposit for December, January & February… I went on the website to check and see if anything flagged it because I thought maybe they were just behind in figuring out that I had changed it to direct deposit… Nothing was stated at all on the website that there were any interruptions in my check so I didn’t worry about it until today 1 March no payment… No check no deposit how can I do this and what am I gonna do

Hi. I'm not sure that I fully understand your problem. The only type of payments that Social Security regularly issues on the 1st day of the month are Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. So, if that's what you're receiving and if you didn't receive your payment this month, you'll need to call Social Security to check on the status. But, if you're receiving Social Security benefits, those benefits are paid either on the 3rd day of the month, or on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th Wednesday of the month (https://www.ssa.gov/kc/rp_paybenefits.htm).

Social Security doesn't cancel a person's benefit eligibility if a check is returned. However, they may put the person's benefits in suspense until they have a correct address or bank account to which the payment should be delivered. Social Security then reinstates the person's payments once they have a correct address and/or bank account number.

By they way, even if your benefits are being paid by direct deposit, it's important to make sure that Social Security has your correct mailing address. If Social Security mails you a notice and if the notice is returned to them due to an incorrect address, they can suspend your benefit payments even if your payments are being directly deposited to your bank account.

Best, Jerry
