What Are Our Spouse Options?

The pandemic closed the company l've worked for this year after26yrs. I will be 62 in 2022 & considering taking my Social Security early than FRA of 67. My spouse is going to continue to work until his FRA in 2022. What are Spouse options regarding social security? We both have 401k. He also has a pension available to him.

Hi. My answer assumes that your husband was born after January 1 1954. You can't qualify for spousal benefits at least until your husband starts drawing his benefits, and your husband couldn't apply for spousal benefits without also being required to apply for his own benefits at the same time. Basically, neither of you will qualify for spousal benefits unless one of your primary insurance amounts (PIA) is more than twice as much as the other spouse's PIA. A person's PIA is equal to their Social Security retirement benefit rate if they start drawing their benefits at full retirement age (FRA).

You could file for your own reduced benefits at age 62 and then apply for spousal benefits when your husband claims his benefits, but as I mentioned above you'll only be eligible for spousal benefits if your husband's PIA is more than double the amount of your own PIA. It sounds like you and your husband may want to strongly consider using our software (https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/purchase) to fully analyze the options available to you in order to determine your best strategy for maximizing your benefits.

Best, Jerry
