Ask Larry

Is There Any Reason For Me To File & Suspend Now?

Dear Professor Kotlikoff,

I hope you can answer what I think is a simple question.

I am 68 and not receiving Social Security. My wife is 70 and in receiving it. Would it be worth it for me to file andsuspend?

Thank you for any information you can give me.

Hi,

I can't think of any reason why it would, at least under the current law. Even if your wife was eligible for an excess spousal benefit on your record, it would not be paid while your benefits are suspended. Furthermore, filing and suspending would eliminate your ability to receive a full widower's benefit in the event your wife was to die before you reach age 70.

Best, Jerry
