Should I Start Social Security Benefits at Age 62?

Hi... I am 62 and my husband is 43. I own my own small business, earning around $30,000 last year. My husband is employed and earned over $60,000. Question... should I start social security benefits at age 62 or wait? How will that affect my husband?

Karen,
If you take your retirement benefit at age 62 it will be permanently reduced to 75% of what it would be at age 66. If you delay taking your retirement benefit until age 70 it will be increased by 32 percent. So, it depends on your goals. Do you want immediate income or do you want to receive the maximum benefits over your lifetime. Your retirement date doesn't affect your husband’s retirement or spouse's benefit, but it might affect his widower's benefit if you die before him. Our software, MaximizeMySocialSecurity, can help you find what works best for you.
Best,
Mike
