Ask Larry

Should I File at 68 or 70?

Generally speaking, if I'm two years older than my wife, would we be better off if I take my SS at 70 or 68? If it makes any difference, my wife has her own SS record but it's lower than the 50% spousal benefit. Thanks, Gerry

Gerry, there is no way to answer this questions generally as the specific answer in your case depends on your relative earnings histories along with other factors and considerations including your exact birthdates. Running our software will not only determine your maximized strategy but also let you enter any number of what-if strategies, seeing how they compare to the maximized strategy and also to each other. Thanks, John
