Should I Be Getting A Survivor Check?

I'm 42years old and my husband died a year m half ago,we was together for 14yrs and seprTed for last 10 yrs,our son is 15yrs old now,he lives with me now sence his father passed.am I allowed a survivor check also?

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

Yes, assuming that your son qualifies for child's benefits on your husband's Social Security account, then it sound's like you may qualify for Social Security mother's benefits (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0415.html). However, if you're working then whether or not you could actually be paid any benefits depends on how much you are earning. Your benefits would be subject to Social Security's earnings test (https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/planner/whileworking.html).

It sounds like you should call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 to see about applying for survivor benefits.

Best, Jerry
