Ask Larry

Now What?

My sis benefits were cancelled because they said I made too much money? I am paralyzed and in a wheelchair..."I CANNOT WORK.....the money was child support which shouldn't be considered income? Now what?

Hi. I assume that your sister was receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is a needs based benefit administered by Social Security. SSI's rules regarding support are complex, and there's not enough information in your question for me to be able to give you any specific advice. But, if you believe that Social Security has made a mistake, your sister could file an appeal (https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10058.pdf). Appeals can take a long time to process, though, so you may first want to call Social Security to try to discuss the issue with an SSI claims representative.

Best, Jerry
