It's so security not coming on the 3rd of each month and it's changing starting in January.2022 What are people to do if their rent is due on the 2nd of each month
Hi. Yours is one of many questions we've received on this topic recently. As I've repeatedly explained, the Social Security law regarding payment dates has not changed since 1997, nor is it changing in 2022. Some people will continue to be paid on the 3rd day of the month indefinitely, but only if they meet one of the following conditions:
- They first filed for benefits before May 1997; or,
- They are receiving both Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security payments; or,
- The state pays for their Medicare premiums; or,
- They live in a foreign country.
People who do not meet one of the above conditions are paid either on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday of the month depending on the birthdate of the worker on whose record the benefits are paid (https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-01957). These payment date regulations were passed into law by Congress in 1997, so if you have questions or concerns about this law you should direct them to your representatives in Congress.
Best, Jerry
