Thank you for the Maximize my Social Security software. We have been using it for several years and and also read your book. We really appreciate your work, thank you.
Question:
Wife took Social Security at 62 in 2018 (diagnosis of cancer but healthy now!)
I took restricted (born in 1951) at that time
I am now retiring and would like to take my own Social Security benefits. I prefer to do this online but I’m not certain of the procedure. Do you have any guidance on this?
Also, how do we know if my wife if eligible for a spousal benefit (we not sure of percentage since the early claiming) and if so, how do we claim it?
Again, thank you for your time and your resources.
James
Hi James,
I appreciate your positive feedback regarding the software. I should explain that although I answer questions that are submitted via this forum, I don't have access to our software customers' data. Therefore, I'm unable to fully answer your questions. Software customers are encouraged to submit questions using an online contact form (https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/contact-form) so that their questions can be answered by one of our experts with access to their data.
I can tell you that you may be able to file for your benefits online using the following Social Security website: https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/. I don't have enough information to know if your wife could qualify for spousal benefits when you file for your benefits, but if she does she won't be able to apply online. Social Security's website states that they're constantly expanding their online capabilities, but currently people aren't allowed to apply for spousal benefits online if they're already drawing their own benefits. So, at least your wife would need to call Social Security to apply for benefits, assuming that she'll qualify for spousal benefits.
Best, Jerry
