What Is The Best Strategy For Us To Maximize Our Social Security Benefits?

Larry,
I will be 66 on April 13 of 2019. I was considering drawing SS at that time. I am the primary earner and still working. My wife turned 62 in December of 2018, and recently talked about filing for her reduced benefits. What is the best strategy for us to maximize our SS benefits.

Hi,

It sounds like your best strategy would depend largely on your and your wife's relative benefit rates. If your benefit rate will be significantly higher than your wife's, you may want to at least consider having her file for her retirement benefits so that you could file for spousal benefits only on her record effective with the month you reach full retirement age (FRA). You would potentially be able to do that because you were born prior to January 2 1954, and were thus grandfathered under the 2015 Social Security amendments that changed the deemed filing rules (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/deemedfaq.html). However, if your wife will still be working and earning more than the amount permitted by Social Security's earnings test (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/whileworking.html), then a different strategy may be better.

You and your wife should strongly consider using our software to help you with your Social Security planning. That way, you can fully compare all of your various options so that you can be sure to choose the best possible overall strategy for claiming your benefits.

Best, Jerry
