Why Am I Unable To File Online?

I will be 66 in February, 2019. I tried to apply online for social security but it won't let me past the first page. I get the error "We cannot create an account for the social security number you entered". I know it is correct, of course. The only thing I can think of is that the system already has my SS # since I filed for Medicare a year ago.

I need answers, as I refuse to use the local Social Security office. I must get this done online. Please advise!

Hi,

Unfortunately, I have no idea what could be causing the problem that you describe. Social Security's website says that you can still file for retirement benefits online even if you already have Medicare (https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/), so that in itself apparently shouldn't prevent you from filing online. I don't know of anything you could do other than contact Social Security to either have them try to help you resolve the problem, or to make an appointment to apply for benefits by phone or in person. You may want to try calling their toll free number 1-800-772-1213 if you'd prefer not to deal with your local office.

Before filing, though, you may want to consider using our software to explore and compare your filing options so that you can choose the best possible strategy for claiming your benefits.

Best, Jerry
