Can I File To Get My Social Security Benefits When I Apply For Medicare?

I will turn 65 in June 2018. I am presently receiving retirement from my job and also from my husband's railroad retirement. When I file for Medicare can I also file to get my social security benefits also? I have filled out paperwork for Medicare Part A and B.

Hi,

Yes, assuming that you are eligible for Social Security. However, the Railroad Board will offset your Tier 1 Railroad (RR) benefits by the amount of any Social Security benefits you receive, so you would likely only benefit from filing for Social Security if your benefit rate would be higher than your Tier 1 RR rate.

Also, you may not need to file an application to be enrolled in Medicare. If you're already receiving RR benefits, the Railroad Board should automatically enroll you in parts A & B of Medicare. I don't have any experience with Railroad Medicare enrollments, though, so you may want to double check with the Railroad Board.

Best, Jerry
