I believe the best SS strategy for me is to commence benefits 11/18 with no retroactive benefits. This would give me 7 months of DRC (birthday 4/4/52) and provide a benefit of right around $2100 per month. DRC's would then be included with 1st payment in 1/19. If there are indications of huge medicare part B premium increase, I could request 1 month retroactive benefit and then be held harmless (already paying part B on my own at $134/month). I'm currently collecting on an annuity that pays approximately $1000/month. I have approximately $500,000 in cash assets and approximately $600,000 in real estate. No mortgages, debts or beneficiaries to worry about (never married, no kids). I also plan to continue working part time earning around $5000 - $10,000/year. Does this seems like a logical strategy given my situation? When would be the best time for me to apply?
Hi,
It's not what I would pick, but the ultimate choice of when to start drawing benefits is up to you. Any initial advantage resulting from the hold harmless provision would almost certainly only be temporary, and I would not consider it to be a major factor. You should strongly consider using the maximization software available on this website in order to compare your filing options so that you can make a fully informed decision.
Best, Jerry
