Larry, My husband (63) will be applying for social security in October, 2017. I turn 66 (my FRA) in late January, 2018. I will be applying for restricted spousal benefits and let my social security grow until I am 70. Do I have to wait to fill out the application until my actual birthday 1/28/52 or can I apply a few months early so the benefits start soon after my birthday? No where have I read when you can complete the online application for restricted benefits, but I know I cannot receive benefits until my 66th birthday. Thank you.
Hi,
You can file for spousal benefits before your birthday, but not until your husband files for his benefits. And, you can file a restricted application for spousal benefits online. Just be sure to properly restrict your application to spousal benefits only. There is a question on the online application asking: 'If you are eligible for retirement benefits and spouse's benefit, do you want to delay receipt of retirement benefit.' You would want to answer that question 'yes' in order to restrict your application to just spousal benefits. I would also suggest adding a remark such as: 'I wish to restrict retirement benefits on my own record from the scope of this application.'
Before filing your applications, you and your husband should consider using the maximization software available on this website in order to be sure that you choose the best overall filing strategy.
Best, Jerry
