My x husband and I divorced after 29 years he has recently past and I am 62 and he was 60 what can I get as far as social security and spousal benefits
Hi,
Assuming that you aren't remarried, It sounds like you would likely be eligible for surviving divorced wife's benefits. However, your benefits would be reduced for age if you start drawing them prior to your full retirement age.
If you are also insured for benefits on your own record, your best strategy is likely one of the following:
1) File for reduced surviving divorced wife's benefits now or as soon as your earnings will permit benefits to be paid, then switch to your own record at age 70; or,
2) File for reduced retirement benefits on your own record now or as soon as your earnings will permit benefits to be paid, then file for unreduced surviving divorced wife's benefits at full retirement age.
Our maximization software can help you determine which of the above filing strategies is best in your case, as well as when to apply for each type of benefit.
Best, Jerry
