When My Wife And I Retire, Will We Each Get Benefits On Our Own Work Histories?

Hi, I have a basic question, my wife and I both work. When we retire will we both each receive our own benefit based on each of our own work histories? Thanks, Joe

Hi Joe,

Yes, that would likely be the case if you're both working and paying Social Security taxes on your earnings. And, if one of you has a full retirement age benefit rate (PIA) that is more than twice as much as the other's PIA, there is also the possibility of additional spousal benefits. Before filing, you may want to run the maximization software available on this website in order to explore all of your filing options.

Best, Jerry
