I'm 57. I've been living with a man for 20 years and I haven't worked. Will I be able to collect social security at all when I'm 65?
Hi,
It's doesn't sound like it. You must have paid into Social Security for at least 10 years (i.e. 40 quarters of coverage) to qualify for retirement benefits on your own record. And, you can't qualify for spousal benefits on the basis of living with someone outside of marriage. Some states recognize common law marriages, but even that requires an intent to marry (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0200305075).
Best, Jerry
