I am 65 and started collecting my social security benefit at age 62. My husband became disabled and started collecting disability payments at age 60, 2 1/2 years ago. Am I eligible to switch from my monthly amount to spousal benefits, which would be significantly more at this time? Also, if I could have done this 2 years ago, can I collect the larger amount retroactively?
Hi,
If 50% of your husband's disability benefit is higher than your own full retirement age benefit amount (i.e. what you would have received if you'd waited until age 66 to apply), the yes you may be eligible for an excess spousal benefit on his record. In that event, you would continue to receive your own reduced benefit, plus the difference between 50% of his benefit and your full retirement age benefit amount (PIA).
You would have to file for this additional benefit to become entitled, and you could not be paid retroactively. Also, if you file for it prior to your full retirement age, the excess amount payable will be reduced for age.
Best, Jerry
