If The VA Rates My Husband Unemployable Should We Check With SS To See If He Can Receive More?

77 year old veteran husband became 100% perm unemployable with VA several years ago should we check with his SS to receive more ? He was injured in navy and has seizures TBI and PTSD

Hi,

Disabling impairments and VA ratings would have no effect on Social Security benefit rates once a person reaches full retirement age (FRA). So, if your husband is now age 77 nothing that you mentioned in your question would change his Social Security benefit amount.

However, if your husband served on active duty in the military prior to 1968, he may want to double check with Social Security to make sure that deemed military wages (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.09/handbook-0953.html) were considered when calculating his Social Security benefit rate.

Best, Jerry
