If I'm Collecting SSDI Benefits At Age 62 Will I Get One Benefit Payment Or Two?

I am receiving $611.00 a month SSDI turning 62 later this year have 40 or more credits SS will I get one or two benefits checks per month

Hi. You'll only get one payment. Nothing will change as a result of your turning age 62. However, when you reach your full retirement age (FRA), then your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits will automatically convert to regular Social Security retirement benefits at the same rate.

No one can be paid both SSDI benefits and Social Security retirement benefits at the same time. Basically, drawing SSDI benefits is like collecting your unreduced full retirement age Social Security benefit rate early. That's why SSDI benefits automatically convert to regular Social Security benefits with no change in the benefit rate when a person reaches FRA.

You could potentially choose to switch from collecting SSDI benefits to retirement benefits when you reach age 62, but then your benefit rate would be reduced for age. In most cases, that just results in a lower monthly payment. The only times when a person may want to consider switching from SSDI to regular retirement benefits prior to FRA is if their SSDI benefits are being offset because they're also receiving worker's compensation or public disability benefits (PDB), or if they have a spouse or child who could collect higher auxiliary benefits if the disabled worker was collecting retirement benefits instead of SSDI.

Best, Jerry.
