If I Receive Spousal Benefits For The Month I Turn 66 Will I Be Deemed To Have Also Filed For My Own Benefits?

In the receipt for my claim for spousal benefits, I state in the remarks that the application is restricted to spousal benefits so that I can earn delayed retirement credits on my own record. (I was born before 1954 so am eligible to file restricted application for spousal benefits and later switch to benefits on my own record.)

But the summary of my application (the receipt) also states that "I want benefits beginning with June 2018." I turn FRA, 66, on June 21. By asking for benefits beginning in June, does that preclude me receiving spousal benefits and then switching to benefits under my own record without having to pay back spousal benefits? Will SS determine that I'm asking for spousal benefits prior to the first full month I'm eligible for spousal benefits, and therefore will award benefits under my own record, which at 66 is higher than my spousal benefits?

If I filed incorrectly, can I re-file a restricted application for spousal benefits and later switch to benefits under my own record? I have not yet received an award letter from SS. I was told I should expect to receive one in a couple of weeks.

Thanks.

Hi,

No, you can be paid spousal benefits only effective for the month in which you reach your full retirement age (FRA) of 66 without being deemed to have also filed for your own benefits. You do not have to be age 66 for the entire month in order to qualify for unreduced spousal benefits for that month. In your case, since you were born apparently born on June 21 1952 Social Security would consider you to be FRA for the entire month of June 2018.

Best, Jerry
