How Would Renting Room To My Separated Husband Affect My SSI?

Receive sis and separated...considering renting room to my separated spouse but will not receive any other income from him..how will this effect me,,,thanks

Hi,

I assume that you mean you are receiving SSI (Supplemental Security Income), which is the needs based program administered by Social Security. If you're still married and living in the same household with your husband, Social Security would likely consider you to be a couple for SSI purposes. Whether or not that would affect your SSI benefits depends on how your rate is presently being computed.

However, living arrangement determinations are often judgment calls based on the individual set of circumstances, so you should always report any changes in your marital status or living arrangements to your SSI caseworker.

Best, Jerry
