How Soon Can I Start Collecting On My New Husband's Record?

I am currently collecting social security benefits on my ex husband, who i was married to for 38 years. I am going to remarry this year. My new husband is collecting his social security. I realize I won't be able to collect on my ex husband anymore, How soon after I get married ,can I expect to start collecting on my new husbands social security? His amount is higher than my own amount.

Hi. If you're currently drawing divorced spousal benefits, then you can potentially qualify for spousal benefits on your new husband's account as early as the first full month that you're married (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.03/handbook-0305.html).

By the way, your current divorced spousal benefits will only end if your ex-spouse is living. If he's deceased, then you could continue receiving survivor benefits even after you remarry. A remarriage that occurs after a person has reached age 60 does not prevent them from qualifying for benefits on the record of a former deceased spouse.

Best, Jerry
