I've run several scenarios using the "Maximize my Social Security" software. I turn 68 this month and currently plan to delay benefits until I reach 70. However, it appears Medicare Part B premiums will again be raised in 2017 for those of us delaying our SS. This adds another dimension to the analysis. It may be difficult to predict future premium increases, but surely this should be part of the analysis. Do you have a suggestion on how to incorporate Medicare Part B premium increases in Social Security plans.
Scotty,
The hold harmless provision only affects your Social Security benefit temporarily, i.e. until future COLAs catchup to Medicare Part B premium increases, which is generally only a couple of years at most. Therefore, consideration of the hold harmless provision would generally only affect your filing strategy if your best strategy otherwise was to file a few months after Nov. If more than that, the increased benefit, by not filing earlier than otherwise, over your lifetime will exceed the temporary relief from the Medicare premium increase.
Best
Mike
