Hi Larry, I’m retiring at the end of July. My questions is how do file for my grandson social security benefits when I retire? We meet the three requirements: under 18, not in school( something about school age), he’s only 4. Lastly, he more than 50% dependent on my income.
Several people have told me this is possible but nobody know how to get the benefits started. My ex wife already receive SSI payments because of her disability. My daughter takes care of my ex wife along with my grandson. Both depends on my income. Do I contact my local Social Security office first? I just don’t know what to ask them. Thanks
Hi. Someone would have to file an application on your grandson's behalf in order to claim child benefits, but he can't apply on your account until you've applied for your benefits. And, unless you've adopted your grandchild, the only way that he could qualify for Social Security child's benefits from your record is if both of his natural parents are either disabled or deceased (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.03/handbook-0325.html).
Best, Jerry
