How Do I Change My Date To Start Drawing Benefits?

I will be 65 in the middle of March and will be retiring at the end of March.
I have applied for SS and it has been approved, however after looking at the letter
I realize I have made a mistake somewhere cause they are Paying my first check
in April which is for March. I do not want my benefits to start til April because I
will be working full time all of March and would just have to send the check back.
How do I change the start date to April? which would mean my first check would
come in May for the month of April?

Hi,

You could change your month of election to start your benefits by submitting a written request to Social Security. The preferred form to use for that purpose would be an SSA-795 (https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ssa-795.pdf).

However, it may not be necessary to do so depending on your expected earnings. If your calendar year earnings for 2018 will be $17,040 or less, you could be paid for March, or even January & February for that matter, regardless of your monthly earnings.

You may want to consider using our maximization software in order to determine your best strategy for claiming benefits.

Best, Jerry
