How Can I Get Benefits On My Husband's Account?

I am currently receiving SS benefits on my own account. I think I would get more if I file on my husbands. How can I change that?

Hi. The only way to get any type of Social Security benefits is to file an application for them. If you're already drawing benefits on your own account, though, you won't be able to apply for other benefits online. So, until Social Security offices reopen, your only option is to apply by phone. You can initiate that process by calling Social Security at 800-772-1213.

Just an FYI, you can't stop collecting benefits on your own account and draw benefits on someone else's account instead. But, if you qualify for a higher auxiliary (e.g. spousal, divorced spousal) or survivor benefit rate, you can apply for an excess auxiliary or survivor benefit to be paid in addition to your own benefit.

Best, Jerry
