How Can I Find Out If My Ex-Husband Has Died?

I have restraining order from my ex husband for rest of my life. But he always used to find out my address and phone number which is scary me. But about month ago, his friend told me that, he heard from some one, that my husband passed away. How can i find out if my ex husband alive or no? If he passed away, i will be able live without scares. I asked SSA, but they not gives such sensitive information.
Thank you in advance.

Hi. My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, so I don't know all the ways that you might be able to determine whether or not a person has died. If you'd be eligible for Social Security survivor benefits in the event of your ex's death, then Social Security should be willing to tell you if their records contain death information on your ex-husband. Social Security generally gets such information from funeral homes and state death indexes.

I suppose you could even file a claim with Social Security for survivor benefits on your ex-husband's account. If the claim is disallowed, then Social Security would need to explain the reason for the disallowance. Obviously, if your ex is still living, that would be a reason for disallowing a claim for survivor benefits. Otherwise, if you know in what state your husband was living then you could request a death certificate from the vital statistics department of that state.

Best, Jerry
