How Can I Find Out If I Can Get Benefits From My Husband's Social Security?

Im 65. Im married but have not seen or heard from husband in 10 years. How can I find out if I can recieve any Soc. Sec. benefit if deceased?

Hi,

You'll need to contact Social Security. Only Social Security has access to all of the records needed to determine what, if any, Social Security benefits that you may qualify for. Social Security receives death information from funeral homes and state databases, so they generally know whether or not a person is still living.

If your husband is deceased, the requirements for entitlement to widow's benefits are outlined in the following section of Social Security's handbook: https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0401.html.

Best, Jerry
