Ask Larry

Can You Explain Why I've Received My Payment Earlier Than Normal For The Last 2 Months?

I have historically received my SS deposit on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Beginning in December 2019 my SS deposit was made on the 3rd Friday. Again now in January 2020 my SS deposit was made on the 3rd Friday. I cant seem to find a reason for the change in date nor do I know if this is just a fluke or if the 3rd Friday is now my new deposit date. If you have any information that would explain why the change I would appreciate hearing from you - THANKS!

Hi,

Assuming that you haven't become entitled to a different type of Social Security benefit (e.g. retirement vs. survivor or spousal), the only explanation that I can think of is that you were paid early due to an upcoming holiday. Christmas day fell of the 4th Wednesday of December in 2019, so people who are normally paid on the 4th Wednesday were paid early that month. That doesn't explain why you would have been paid on a different day in January 2020, though, since the 4th Wednesday of that month isn't a holiday. It could just be that your bank credited your payment to your account earlier than they should have, although you may want to check with the bank and or Social Security if you'd like to investigate further.

Best, Jerry
