Can My Wife Get Spousal Benefits When I File?

I am 59 years old and working planning to retire at full retirement age. My wife is 11 years younger and non working. My question to you is will she be qualify to get SS if I retire at the age of 67 years.

Thanks!
Mike

Hi Mike,

No, unless she has an eligible minor or disabled child in her care, she can't get spousal benefits until she is at least age 62. And, if she starts reduced spousal benefits at age 62, they will be about 35% lower than the full rate. To get an unreduced spousal benefit, which would be equal to 50% of the your full retirement age benefit amount, she would need to wait until she reaches her full retirement age to apply. Also, if she is eligible for benefits on her own record, she will only receive roughly the higher of the two benefits (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/applying6.html).

Best, Jerry
