Can My Wife And I File Online?

I am currently receiving spousal benefits under a restricted application that I filed at age 66. Once I turn 70, I want to apply for my full retirement benefit and have my wife apply for a spousal benefit. Is it possible to do this online or on the phone or must we go in person to the Social Security office? By the way, I recently purchased Maxifi and love it!

Hi,

I'm glad to hear that you love the software. Social Security's website says that they're constantly expanding their online abilities, but the last I knew there was a restriction on filing online if you're already drawing benefits on your own Social Security record. Therefore, I think you may be able to file for your benefits online, but your wife likely won't be able to file for spousal benefits online. You could either file online and then your wife could call Social Security make an appointment to file by phone, or you could both just file by phone at the same time.

Best, Jerry
