Can My Husband Get More From Social Security If The VA Has Given Him A 100% Disability Rating?

Husband started drawing s/s at 62. worked pretty much full time till 80. which is 18 years after he started drawing s/s. At 79 years old V.A. gave him a 100 % service connection disability due to being deaf. Can he draw any more through s/s?

Hi,

The VA diagnosis and rating wouldn't have any bearing on your husband's Social Security benefit rate, and people can't qualify for Social Security disability benefits after reaching full retirement age. So, if your husband could get higher Social Security benefits it wouldn't have anything to do with the VA.

Since your husband worked after he filed for benefits his earnings could result in a higher Social Security benefit rate (https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10070.pdf), but recomputations to include additional earnings are done automatically by Social Security and would likely already be included in your husband's current benefit rate. If he wants to check he could submit proof of his most recent earnings (e.g. W-2 form) to Social Security and request a manual recomputation.

Best, Jerry
