Can My Husband Get Half Of My Benefit Rate?

Hello,
I am 60 and began drawing Social Security Disability due to a rare cancer in May 2017. My husband is 67 and has been drawing his social security benefit since he was age 62. My disability benefit is $1968.00 and my husband's is $479.00 Could my husband's benefit be figured to receive half of my benefit at this time?
Thank you,
Gail

Hi Gail,

He wouldn't get a full half of your benefit rate, but it sounds like he would probably qualify for some additional spousal benefits.

Unreduced spousal benefits are calculated starting with 50% of the worker's primary insurance amount (PIA), and then subtracting the spouse's own PIA. Your disability amount is likely the same as your PIA, and if your husband took his benefits at age 62 and receives $479, then his PIA must be roughly $639. So, it sounds like your husband might be eligible for a spousal benefit of around $345 (i.e. $1968/2 - $639). That amount could then be added to his reduced retirement rate making his combined amount roughly $824. Obviously, though, this is just an approximation based on the information stated in your question, so your husband's actual rate may vary.

Since your husband is already over full retirement age, it would likely be advantageous to file spousal benefits ASAP since his benefit rate won't get any higher if he waits to start drawing.

Best, Jerry
