Grandchildren can only qualify for benefits on a grandparent's record if they are a) adopted by the grandparent, or b) both of their natural parent's are either deceased or disabled. Also, there is a special family maximum provision that applies to disability records, which in some cases precludes anyone other than the disabled worker from receiving benefits on their record (https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/COLA/dibfamilymax.html).
