Can I Take Spousal Benefits And Not Take My Own Benefits Until Age 70?

I am 63 and husband is 70. He started taking SS at 65 and 2 months. The year he turns full retirement age. When is the best time for me to take my SS and can I take 1/2spousal benefits and not take mine until age 70

Hi,

Since you were apparently born after January 1 1954, you won't be able to file just for spousal benefits only without also filing for your own retirement benefits at the same time (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/deemedfaq.html). So, when you file you will basically just receive the higher of your retirement or spousal rates, and your rate will be reduced for age if you start drawing before your full retirement age.

The best time to file for your benefits largely depends on your and your husband's comparative benefit rates. What you should strongly consider doing is using our maximization software to compare all of your filing options and determine which one is best in your case.

Best, Jerry
