Can I Receive Spousal Benefits Before My Husband Files?

Apr 19 2017 - 6:45am

Both me and my husband will both be 63 this may 2017. I would like to know if I can received spouse benefits which are higher then my benedits, M y husband plans to collect at 70. Do i have to wait until his full retirement age of 66 collect on his benefits, or can I collect now under spousal benefits?

You can't get spousal benefits until your husband starts drawing his benefits. You could file on your own record now or at age 66, and then file for an excess spousal benefit when your husband files. But, if you file for benefits before age 66, which is your full retirement age if you were born in 1954, your benefit rate will be reduced, and that reduction will continue even if you subsequently start receiving an excess spousal benefit.

You may want to consider running the maximization software available on this website in order to explore your filing options and determine your best strategy.
