Can I Receive Any Benefits On My Deceased Husband's Record Now?

I am 61.5 yrs of age, work full-time, earn 157k annually, and am widowed for over 10 yrs (have not re-married). Is there a Social Security Survivor benefit on my deceased husband's record for which I am eligible now while continuing to work until age 70?

Hi,

If you're earning that much you probably couldn't receive any benefits until at least January of the year in which you reach your full retirement age (FRA), unless you won't be working in some months prior to then (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/rule.html).

Your best strategy is likely one of the following:
1) File for reduced widow's benefits as soon as your earnings will permit at least some benefits to be paid, then switch to your own record at age 70; or,
2) File for reduced retirement benefits on your own record at age 62 or as soon as your earnings will permit at least some benefits to be paid, then file for unreduced widow's benefits at your full retirement age.

Generally, you would want to start out drawing the lower benefit first and then switch to the higher record when it reaches it's highest potential rate. The maximization software available on this website can sort this all out for you and help you determine your best overall filing strategy.

Best, Jerry
