Can I Get Survivor Benefits?

Larry my husband got killed in 2018 people have told me that I can get survivors benefits cause I have a hearing problem. I would like to know if this is true. I have drawed disability years ago cause of my hearing but stopped drawing cause I got a job. I am 57 years old so can I still get survivors benefits since I am disabled cause of my hearing?

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Unless you have a child in your care who's eligible for benefits on your husband's account, you would have to be disabled according to Social Security's standards in order to qualify for widow's benefits prior to age 60. I don't know if your hearing loss would be considered severe enough to be classified as disabling by Social Security's definition, but you could definitely apply for disabled widow's benefits in order to find out. You may want to contact Social Security to see about applying for benefits.

Best, Jerry
