Can I Get Extra From My Husband's Social Security?

I am going to turn 64 on Oct. 12, 2016. I am still employed and I make roughly $36,000 per year. My husband retired when he was 62 and he will turn 65 in Nov. , 2016. When should I star collection my SS benefits? Are there any extra $ I can get from my husbands SS?
I'm so confused and I want to maximize my benefits. Thank you

Hi,

Yes, in all likelihood your best strategy would be to file just for spousal benefits at your full retirement age (FRA) of 66, then switch to your own record at age 70. This filing strategy is still available to you because you were born before January 2 1954, and are thus grandfathered under the new law on deeming (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/deemedfaq.html).

The best overall strategy for you and your husband depends on numerous factors, however, so you may want to consider running the maximization software available on this website to be sure you make the right choices.

Best, Jerry
